This assessment aims to enhance student awareness of the vocational opportunities available in sport and recreation event management and the associated desirable skills; allowing you to develop reflective practice, critical evaluation and work based competencies.

You will produce a portfolio that will detail from a management perspective an evaluation of the selected event. You will produce a portfolio of work comprising of a detailed report of the event including in its appendices any raw data collected. It should consider (as a minimum) the following order now

§ The Event Lifecycle: Marketing

§ The Event Lifecycle: Implementation

§ The Event Lifecycle: Wrap-up processes

§ Project evaluation

§ Personal reflection

Apply theoretical issues relating to relevant aspects of sport and recreation management to a sport event.

Analyse the ways in which key management approaches are practiced within the sport industry

How do I produce high quality work that merits a good grade?
A critical review of the organisation’s current event practice (including product and service portfolio/provision), as well as an examination of the internal and external environments so as to 1) establish the degree to which there is a ‘strategic fit’ between event planning practice and business environment and 2) generate a range of viable, evidence-based, evaluations. This will necessitate the considered use of key strategic analysis tools, as well as the appropriate use of supportive literature.

It is important to note the assessment task requires you to “critically review” the organisation’s event planning practice. This requires that you do not simply state/describe what the organisation does, but also why and how it does it; you must be sure to draw upon multiple sources and relevant evidence to establish the viability – the strategic fit – of the organisation’s mode and scope of business as it is set against what is a changing industry context.

This is an evidence-based exercise and as such it is expected that you draw upon a wide-variety of information sources, i.e., policy documents, industry periodical articles, as well as academic publications (book chapters and journal articles). In short, show your working!

 

How does this assignment relate to what we are doing in scheduled sessions?
The unit sessions combines formal “summative” (individually case study and project work) and regular informal “formative” (problem-based, cooperative and reflective) modes of delivery, drawing also upon peer review and peer support techniques throughout the unit, so as to emphasise and develop individual as well as collaborative student learning,
