Title: The Ever Changing Technology in Casinos
Introduction and Background: Since the legalization of gambling in the United States in 1931, there have been many advancements in technology to help casinos prosper. Today, there are over 450 casinos in the U.S. utilizing this technology. The casino industry produced over 5.4 billion in tax revenue last year alone, as well as provided over 350,000 jobs. This industry relies on a plethora of IS software in order to be successful. From surveillance monitoring systems to bookkeeping software, casinos would not be where they are today without the development of IS software that has helped them stay vigilant in a cash heavy world. Purpose of the Research: The team’s objective is to discuss the role of information systems in the casino industry. With Porter’s five forces model guiding our research, we will discuss: bargaining power of customers, threat of substitutions, bargaining power of suppliers, threat of new entrants & rivalry. The team will research and describe the casino industry structure, competitive strategy, value chains, business processes and information systems; furthermore, provide examples of successful and unsuccessful information systems within the industry. Data Collection Methods: Data will be collected through various methods. Primarily we will use online databases such as Galileo and Google Scholar. Secondary, we will also gather our research from the book Why Casinos Matter: Thrity -One Evidence-Based Propositions from the Health and Social Sciences, A report from the Council on Casinos, an independent group of scholars and public policy leaders convened by the Institute for American Values.
