A family with an African American father and white mother has recently moved into a house down the street. You think nothing of it, but you begin to hear some of the neighbors expressed concern that the neighborhood “has begun to change.” Then one night a brick is thrown through the window of the new family’s home, and around the brick is wrapped the message, “Go back to where you came from!” Since you’re new to the neighborhood yourself, you don’t want to make waves, but you are also shocked by this act of racial hatred. Discuss benefits/programs that the elderly population receives in the United States. Compare your answers to examples that were provided in your textbook of The Netherlands and Sweden (or post an example from a different country if you wish). Do you believe the United States government is doing what they need to do for elderly citizens? Do you think they do too much already or not enough?
